NEXRAD
Stage I File Description

These data products are encoded
in binary format. The individual hourly products have a naming convention of the following format:
"nnnHDPxxx.mmdd.hhmmss"
For the period of record prior to January 2002:
Each day these encoded products are compressed
and tarred into a daily file named "SimmddyyRFCIDraw.tar".
At the end of month, these daily files are tarred into a monthly file
and posted on the web in the form of "SimmyyRFCIDraw.tar".
For the period of record beginning January 2002:
Each day these encoded products are compressed
and tarred into a daily file named "stage1raw_mmddyyyy_RFCIDraw.tar".
At the end of month, these daily files are tarred into a monthly file
and posted on the web in the form of "stage1raw_mmyyyy_RFCIDraw.tar".
To extract
hourly NEXRAD Stage I files, first untar the monthly files to get
the daily files, then untar the daily files to get the compressed
hourly files, then uncompress the hourly files.
Use the UNIX tar
and uncompress utilities or equivalent.
The following notation applies.
nnn three character NWS office identifier
xxx three character radar identifier
mm two-digit month number (01-12)
dd two-digit day of the month (01-31)
yy two-digit year (00-99)
yyyy four-digit year (beginning 2002)
hh two-digit hour in UTC (00-23)
mm two-digit minute in UTC (00-59)
ss two-digit second in UTC (00-59)
RFCID two character River Forecast Center identifier
